GAZA CITY, Jan. 9 (IslamOnline & News
Agencies) - Three Israeli occupation soldiers and two Palestinians were killed
at dawn Wednesday in exchanges of fire inside territory occupied by Israelis at
the southern edge of the Gaza Strip, Palestinian security officials said, news
agencies reported.
The clashes occurred near an Israeli occupation
army post at Keren Shalom, close to the Gaza town of Rafah, said the officials
who were informed by Israeli occupation soldiers from the Israeli-Palestinian
liaison group, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.
The officials claimed the two Palestinians were
wearing police uniforms but did not belong to the security services.
Israeli military radio said two Palestinian
bombers had infiltrated occupied territory before being killed. One managed to
penetrate the Israeli occupation army position near Keren Shalom, where he was
killed, while the other was killed when Israeli soldiers gave chase.
It claimed both had been wearing bombs and
managed to launch several grenades and open fire with automatic weapons before
they died.
The Israeli radio reported the Israeli cabinet
was meeting Wednesday and would discuss the repercussions of the incident, while
noting that the meeting had been scheduled for several days.
The radio added that a state of maximum alert
had been clamped on several Israeli settlements in the south of the Gaza Strip
following the "serious incident." The radio claimed it could not give
details as it was bound by censorship.
In another development, the International
Journalists Union based in Brussels made an urgent call Tuesday to confront the
dangerous threat facing journalists who cover the Palestinian-Israeli conflict,
the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.
In the statement the Union detailed Israeli
abuse against journalists, including the killing of three reporters and wounding
dozens of them during their news covering in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
The statement rejected the Israeli canceling of
the IDs of Palestinian journalists, also demanding the provision of bullet proof
vests for journalists, and special international tags for Palestinian
journalists.
