Ramallah: A City Under Fire

An Israeli soldier orders two Palestinians to carry the body of a dead Palestinian inside a house in central Ramallah

RAMALLAH, March 31 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) – Israel has conducted wide range military and abduction operations in Ramallah Sunday, March 31, news agencies reported.

Qatari based Al Jazeera satellite channel quoted Palestinian sources that Israel has a list of Palestinian officials and activists which they are planning to liquidate.

Israeli forces have enforced a closure of Bethlehem and all stores were shut down, completely isolating the city.

Earlier the station reported that European peace activists have entered the city of Beit Sahoor and tried to defy the Israeli tanks, which entered Bethlehem.

The Palestinian Chamber of Commerce was burnt down and the Palestinian Statistic Center was also attacked.

Israeli forces have planted landmines around the city of Ramallah and U.S. made Apache helicopters hovered over the city. Israeli forces have shot dead nine unarmed Palestinians in a sports club in Ramallah.

The Israeli forces have also prevented ambulances from tending to the injured news agencies reported. Earlier Sunday, the Red Crescent Society tried to contact Israeli officials to allow them to take the injured security officials that have been fending off the Israeli soldiers from entering Arafat’s office and were not allowed to do that.

Meanwhile, three Israeli tanks entered the Ramallah hospital which triggered a sit-in outside the hospital by the doctors and nurses that prevented the tanks from entering the hospital. Hospital officials have refused the request of Israeli soldiers to enter the hospital, search it and compile a list of all those injured.

According to medical sources there is a serious shortage in medication, blood and oxygen in most hospitals.

In Bethlehem, Christians celebrating Easter were not allowed to go to their churches as Israeli soldiers told them that “Palestinians are not allowed to pray”, reported Al Jazeera.

The Ramallah Municipality was attacked and Ayoub Riyah, the head of the municipality, said that Israeli tanks surrounded it. “If the situation in Ramallah continues the way it is, then there will soon be a severe shortage of medicines, and baby milk in the city,” said Riyah.

There is also an American activist march that plans to head to Palestinian President Yasser Arafat’s headquarters.

Several buildings surrounding Arafat were attacked and food and drink supplies have run out at his compound.
