REPEATS: ARAFAT IS OUR ENEMY |
OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, March 31 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) – Speaking to the Israeli public, hawkish Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon attempted to justify to the world his reasons behind the aggressive policies that he has adopted against the Palestinians.
“We have entered an uncompromising war that we have not chosen but that we must go through. We have tried to work to create peace but with no avail. We must fight this terrorism, in an uncompromising war to uproot these savages, to dismantle their infrastructure because there is no compromise with terrorists. Arafat is Israel’s enemy and the enemy of the free world,” said Sharon, comparing the martyr operations in Israel to the September 11 deadly attacks in New York.
“Citizens of Israel: the state of Israel is at war, a war against terror. This terrorism is activated, coordinated and directed by one man, Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat. Israel is living a critical moment in its history. We shall win. And when we do that that’s the only time we can live here in peace,” said Sharon.
Commenting on his speech, Palestinian Minister of Information, Yasser Abd Raboo told Qatari-based Al Jazeera Satellite Channel that Sharon’s policy is short sighted to think that through occupation he can solve the crisis of his people.
“This speech is the second face of the Texas speech which we heard [referring to U.S. president George Bush’s speech]. He tried to link his actions to what the U.S. is doing in fighting its alleged war against terrorism. He’s trying to recruit the sentiments of the Israeli people behind him. Now he talks after receiving the green light from the US. The demonstrations throughout the Arab world is our only response to Sharon,” said Abd Rabbo.
Mohammad Rasheed, Arafat’s advisor told Abu Dhabi Satellite Channel said that it is the same logic which Sharon is applying now was used in Lebanon over 20 years ago. “Where did this logic lead us? To the massacres of the Sabra and Shateela camps. In order to impose a new leader for a nation you need to get rid of the previous one. This is what Sharon is doing,” said Rashid.
He added that Arafat is calling for the Arab leaders to ask for international forces to monitor the situation in Ramallah. “There must be a quick emergency summit to be held anywhere in the Arab world, in Beirut, Cairo, in a boat or plane, at least for the leaders to save face in front of their people. We are expecting tough days to come,” said Rasheed.
