Barghuti arrives in the Tel Aviv district court, Thursday, May
20, 2004. The 44-year-old member of the Palestinian parliament
is charged with 26 counts of murder and heading Al-Aqsa
Martyrs Brigades, an armed offshoot of Fatah responsible for a
string of deadly anti-Israel attacks. Resistant Palestinian
group Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade said it would kidnap Israeli
soldiers to secure the release of Barghuti, who was convicted
