Thousands Commemorate Red Mosque Anniversary
Thousands of Pakistanis rallied amid tight security in Islamabad on Sunday, July 6, 2008, to commemorate the first anniversary of the deadly siege and storming of the Red Mosque, officials said. Pakistani troops surrounded the mosque on July 3, 2007, after clashes with militants holed up inside, and stormed one week later. More than 100 people were killed during the operation. The storming of the mosque unleashed a wave of suicide bombings across the country that left around 1,000 people dead.
