Thai Protesters Blocked From Disputed Temple
Thai police and angry villagers blocked nationalist protesters on Thursday, July 17, 2008, from rallying at an ancient temple at the centre of a diplomatic row with neighboring Cambodia. The International Court of Justice ruled in 1962 that the 900-year-old Preah Vihear temple belonged to Cambodia. The latest flare-up -- which has seen a buildup of troops on both sides of the border -- was sparked by Bangkok's support for the UNESCO listing, which the opponents in Thailand said was tantamount to selling out Thailand's heritage.
