Swiss Back New Rules on Asylum-Seekers: Official
Swiss voters have endorsed government-backed changes to existing laws on asylum-seekers and job-hunters from outside Europe, the Justice Ministry said on
Sunday, September 24, 2006. In a statement, the ministry said 68 percent of voters in a referendum had approved the measures, which it said were designed to maintain Switzerland's humanitarian traditions while fighting abuse. Critics, including the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), say that the new rules could make it more difficult for genuine refugees to win protection in Switzerland.
