NABLUS, West Bank, January 11 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - A Palestinian stone-thrower was shot dead and nine others were wounded by Israeli occupation soldiers in the Askar refugee camp in the West Bank town of Nablus Saturday, January 11, witnesses and medical sources said.

Bassem Shanir, 20, was shot dead when a group of Palestinian youths threw rocks at Israeli armored vehicles. The Israeli soldiers answered with live fire, they said, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

Two of the nine wounded Palestinians were in a critical condition, the Palestinian medical sources said.

Israeli Tanks Withdraw From Jenin

Stones are the “weapon” of choice for Palestinian children resisting Israeli occupation

Earlier Saturday, Israeli occupation troops withdrew from the West Bank town of Jenin and its adjacent refugee camp following a sweeping incursion into the city earlier.

The forces of the Palestinian resistance exchanged fire with the Israeli troops, who forced Palestinian residents out of their houses in a frosty weather, local sources told IslamOnline’s correspondent.

IslamOnline learned that the hospital of Jenin did not receive any wounded Palestinians.

AFP quoted a military Israeli official as describing the Jenin operation as "routine," adding that the number of the Israeli forces was not large.

The Israeli official said the curfew imposed on Jenin had been lifted, pointing out that the Israeli soldiers had returned to their positions on the outskirts of the city.

Earlier on Saturday morning, some 50 armored vehicles and 300 infantry moved into the area, and soldiers carried out house-to-house searches before withdrawing to their positions.

Explosive devices were thrown at the soldiers, but no casualties occurred. There were also no initial reports of any arrests being made.

In the meantime, medical Palestinian sources in the West Bank city of Nablus said they have found the body of Sami Mohammed Samir, 23, who was shot dead by Israeli gunfire during the first few days of January. The body was found mutilated and rotten, the sources added.
