Greenpeace Activists Board Ex-French Warship Saying It’s Carrying Toxic Waste to India

Two Greenpeace activists boarded a decommissioned French warship Thursday to protest its departure for India for dismantling, saying it carries hundreds of tons of toxic waste. The activists chased down the carrier Clemenceau in the southern Mediterranean, near the entrance to the Suez Canal, and climbed the ship’s mast; the activists were urging Egyptian authorities to refuse it access to the canal. Greenpeace wants France to take back the ship, saying the Clemenceau holds hundreds of tons of toxic waste, including 500 tons of asbestos.

Clinton Announces AIDS Drugs Deal

A foundation run by former US President Bill Clinton has negotiated a deal that will cut the cost of HIV tests and Aids treatment in developing countries. Mr. Clinton said hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved as a result of the agreement with several drugs firms, which he said was only a "first step’’.

Avian Influenza Virus in Mammals Spreads Beyond the Site of Infection to Other Organ Systems

Researchers at Erasmus Medical Center have demonstrated systemic spread of avian influenza virus in cats infected by respiratory, digestive, and cat-to-cat contact. Rimmelzwaan et al. examined cats infected, As expected, all cats were infected with H5N1 virus and exhibited clinical signs of disease, Most interesting, virus spread throughout the organ systems with virus being found in respiratory and digestive tracts, liver, kidney, heart, brain, and lymph nodes.

Leptin Fights Depression

The appetite-control hormone leptin staves off symptoms of stress in rats, and might lead to new ways to fight human depression, say researchers in the United States. Leptin is famed for controlling our weight and appetite. But the hormone, which is released by fat cells and gives the brain a reading of our fat stores, is also thought to act in brain areas involved in emotion.
