Nigerian Muslim State Bans Women's Soccer

LAGOS, Jan 7 (AFP) - Nigeria's northwest state of Zamfara, which recently declared Sharia law, has outlawed female football because it is "un-Islamic" a sports official announced here on Friday.

"Women's football has been banned in Zamfara," declared state director of sports, Shehu Gusau. "The sport is against the teachings of Islam," he added. "The government will also soon build another stadium specially designed to have separate stands for men and women."

The female national team, the Falcons - the African women's champions - qualified for the Sydney Olympics after reaching the quarterfinals at last year's World Cup in the United States.

Sharia, proclaimed in October, will officially come into operation on January 27.
