BERLIN (Quds Press) July 12 - Sheikh Abdel Salam Yassen, leader of the Group "Justice and Goodness", said his movement represented the majority of the Moroccan population and that it is able sweep the next general elections. Sheikh Yassen made these statements in an interview published Tuesday in the German paper Vilet, commenting that he has many suspicions concerning the existence of democracy in Morocco. Speaking about the Moroccan King "Mohammed VI", Yaseen said he was a very dynamic monarch who travels a great deal. Yaseen also told the paper that despite increasing poverty among Moroccans, the king has attempted to improve the economy. Commenting on illiteracy in Morocco, he stated that half of Morocco is illiterate and that the percentage jumps to 96% when it comes to women. Yaseen pointed out that the state controls the media and electoral process, practices that deprive Morocco of any real democracy. Yaseen concludes, "We do not live in a democracy." Subject to house arrest that was lifted last May, Yaseen stressed the necessity of applying "Human rights, social justice, and facilitating economic growth and employment in Morocco." He noted that Sharia' (Islamic Law) and the essence of democracy do not contradict. Shedding light on the sensitive question of an Islamic political party in Morocco, Yaseen stated, "Three years ago the government offered us the opportunity to establish a political party in exchange for refraining from criticism against the king and the palace which we rejected." Yaseen also said that the government had to realize that, "We are not a minority and not just a religious elite, as we represent the majority of the people." Answering a question on the lineage of the Moroccan royal family to the Prophet Mohammed, Yaseen said, "Actually the 10 million Moroccans living here may eventually be related to the prophet." |
