First Jordanian Radio Broadcast Via The Net

By Montasser Marei

AMMAN (Islam Online) July 11 - A Jordanian radio station now under construction will be the first to broadcast via the Internet as soon as necessary legislation to run such a radio news broadcast is completed. The radio is expected to begin operation early next month and will include both audio and visual offerings.

The team expected to run the radio web page is currently undergoing crash-training, receiving technical and media courses under the supervision of experts: former BBC employees, university professors and technicians specializing in editing and broadcasting.

The director of the Arab Center for Media Studies, founded in 1996 and based in Amman, Dawood Kattab, said the idea came about during an international media conference that took place last March in Jordan.

During this conference the Jordanian Information minister at that time said there would be no problem in broadcasting via the Internet from Jordan.

Dawood said there were two views in Jordan concerning the matter. One, held by King Abdullah II, professing modernization and openness, and another against change and preferring to hold onto the status-quo.

Dawood told the Jordanian press that the station applied strict measures for recruitment. Out of 300 persons who applied to work at the station, only 15 were hired. The new hires immediately started an intensive course at the UNESCO, one of the sponsors of the project.

Katab said that current local news does not provide adequate coverage and engage in enough field reporting. He emphasized the new station will have a better diversification of its news outlook, including more non-political material, sports and culture.

A UNESCO official said that the new radio station homepage will avoid politics and would focus on cultural, economic and social issues. The official said that UNESCO promised to support the new station in both its regular and Internet broadcasts.
