Tajikistan: Three Million People Face Starvation

by Mohammed Ibraheem

CAIRO (Islam Online) July 29 - An international report by UN affiliated organizations said that three million people in Tajikstan - half the population - face hunger and malnutrition.

The report issued on Friday by a joint mission of the World Food Organization and the International Food Program, both UN organizations, said that immediate food aid and seeds should be directed to the Central Asian nation to avert a tremendous crisis.

It noted that Tajikistan's food crisis is the result of a harsh drought that exacerbated economic problems and deteriorated irrigation and agricultural production.

The UN-supervised report warned that the Tajik people would not be able to meet daily basic food needs if the international community failed in securing the required aid.

Tajikistan is considered among the poorest countries in the world where 58% of the population falls under the poverty line. The report states that within the next six months approximately 1.8 million people will be in critical need of aid.

Tajikistan will need over 631 thousand tons of wheat and 787 thousand tons of cereals in order to sustain itself over those six months. Currently, Tajikistan has guarantees of only 47 thousand tons of cereals.
