CONAKRY (AFP) - Sixty people were killed overnight in a "rebel" attack in a village near Macenta, southeastern Guinea, near the border with Liberia, Guinean police sources said Saturday.
Most of the victims were civilians, but at least three Guinean soldiers also were killed, said sources in the village, quoted by the police. The assailants came from neighboring Liberia, according to the same sources. It was the fourth attack in the Macenta region since the start of the month. On September 17th, 35 people were killed, including one U.N. refugee agency (UNHCR) worker, and 29 others injured in an attack in Macenta, some 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the Liberian border. Authorities in Conakry blamed the attack on Liberian rebels. Guinean authorities have claimed that Liberia and Burkina Faso, along with Sierra Leonean rebels, are backing insurgents in southern Guinea. |
