Syria says "No More" to World Bank Loans
DAMASCUS, Oct 23 (AFP) - Syria will not seek more loans from the World Bank because its interest rates are too high, Economy Minister Mohammad Imadi said in a newspaper interview published on Monday.
The bank is examining projects in Syria but "the offers are not attractive because of the high interest rates," he told Tishrin, a government daily.
Syria, which has launched a policy of economic liberalization, started to repay its debts to the World Bank with a first installment of 269.5 million dollars on the principle in September 1997.
Outstanding interest of 256.9 million dollars has been rescheduled over a five-year period from October 1997.
